Holding Tanks are an alternative system installed after the septic tank or pump tank as a result of unsuitable soil, poor drainage or a difficult land layout for typical Trenches/ Drain field. They could also be a temporary tank system until council sewer is constructed. These tanks are normally concrete, fibreglass or polyethylene with a capacity of around 5,000 litres for the average domestic house. They normally have a pump out line towards the street front where your service provider can connect their hose for pump outs. Holding tanks must be pumped out regularly by either an independent supplier like Suttons or a council contractor, depending on the LGA you reside in.

The frequency of the pump out will depend on the water usage of the household; it can be anything from weekly to every 12 weeks. Always make sure a holding tank is installed with a pump out line for easy waste removal and is accessible for regular inspections and maintenance. Do not plant any trees or shrubs close enough for their roots to enter the tank or pipework.
For residents in the Sunshine Coast Council LGA, Suttons is able to offer a scheduled service on a set frequency to pump out your holding tank, please contact the office for more information.
